don’t be afraid of the snow! | winter portrait photography

Okay, so if you’re geographically located anywhere near me, you know winter is far from leaving. Perfect reason for it to be the subject of today’s post. I know we’re all exhausted with Winter and we’re ready to just say ‘bye’ but it’s sure to be with us for at least a few more weeks. That being said, let’s make the most of this winter weather while it’s still here!

I’ve had so many clients and inquiries about working outdoors in winter conditions. All I can say over and over again is please, please, PLEASE don’t be afraid of the snow! While I don’t recommended getting out there in the middle of a blizzard and I won’t go out and shoot in -75 below, I do love getting out in the winter. Don’t be afraid of having your portraits taken outdoors in December, January, February or even March!

I promise you won’t perish in the cold. In fact, in a day or two you’ll probably forget all about those nippy toes and fingers. What you won’t forget is a fun day and beautiful memories because winter photos are some of the best looking ones out there! So long as your prepared and dressed for the cold, I swear it will be alright!

Winter sunsets are absolutely stunning but winter is also ideal in the day time because you tend to get a lot of overcast. Overcast makes for gorgeous mid day photos because there’s no harsh light creating harsh shadows! Even when the sun peaks out it tends to be a lot more hazy in the winter, at least on most days! And when that sun is out and you can find some open shade to shoot in then the results can be magical!

I want to keep this post relatively short and wrap up about here. So photographers and subjects alike, don’t be afraid of heading outdoors for some gorgeous winter portraits. When it’s freezing I opt for gorgeous window lighting indoors but when the cold isn’t that bad, grab a coffee and a warm coat and get on our there! Odds are the kids will have a blast playing in the snow and you’ll create great memories with your family and/or significant other while you’re out there!
